
Drag the playhead to the frame where the subject turns. That is usually more revealing than the hero frame. A loose hair crosses a bright wall, a shoe meets the floor, and the old room flashes in a lens. Now scrub backward. If the far wall travels with the foreground, the new video background is not a room; it is a sticker.
I would pin three frames beside the timeline: the first clean view, the strongest move, and the last clean view. No twenty-frame contact sheet yet. Those three are enough to ask whether the matte, light, depth, and camera story agree. PlateMap Move 1 — Read the camera before cutting the subject
PlateMap 01 — Camera path
Watch once with your hands off the controls. Is the camera locked, panning, tilting, pushing, pulling, orbiting, or handheld? Mark the instant it speeds up or settles. Then run the shot backward. Slow sliding is surprisingly easy to miss forward.
Keep the three anchor frames open. Add a fourth only when the shot changes behavior. They are working evidence, not a before-and-after collage.
PlateMap 02 — Matte readiness
Before choosing a neon loft or a sunny beach, look at the cutout you actually have. Hair, sheer cloth, glass, smoke, motion blur, and a sleeve that matches the old wall can make the edge uncertain. Mark clean, uncertain, or missing. We will fix it later is not a category.
If information has vanished from the source, do not promise that a better prompt can restore it. A shorter clip or a calmer replacement may be the honest answer. Check the current upload guidance in APOB before production instead of repeating an old format note.
PlateMap 03 — What passes in front
List every occluder: a hand, prop, chair, hair strand, smoke, glass, doorway, foreground plant, or another person. Decide whether it belongs with the subject, the old background, or a new foreground layer. Mark when it enters and leaves.
An object that crosses the subject needs consistent depth ordering. If it disappears behind the matte or remains glued to the old plate, the composite will break even when the subject edge looks clean.
Make a matte-risk strip from the three approval frames. Label each edge green, amber, or red: green is clean separation, amber needs local correction, and red contains missing or inseparable information. Choose a replacement whose brightness and color do not amplify every red edge unless the shot can be repaired.
PlateMap 04 — Depth evidence
Look for perspective lines, focus changes, atmospheric softness, scale change, camera translation, and relative motion between objects. These signals reveal approximate depth. A background with no compatible depth structure may look like a flat poster.
Adobe’s camera and light documentation explains how one-node and two-node cameras, points of interest, and camera movement relate in a 3D composition. Use those concepts to describe the source, not to pretend you know its exact lens from visual inspection alone.
PlateMap Move 2 — Stack the replacement as near, human, and far worlds
PlateMap 05 — Near layer
The near layer contains elements that should move most relative to the camera: a table edge, plant, doorway, rail, or foreground light. It establishes depth quickly but also exposes tracking errors. Give each element a reason to be there and keep it from covering the subject’s critical action.
If the source has no foreground crossing, a simple near layer may be safer than an elaborate one. Complexity is not realism by itself.
PlateMap 06 — Human plane
The human plane is where the subject stands, sits, or moves. Match floor height, eye line, object scale, and plausible distance to nearby surfaces. Check feet, chair contact, hand-to-object interaction, and whether the subject appears too large or small for the room.
Place a temporary grid on the floor or wall to verify perspective through the shot. Remove it only after the three approval frames and full playback agree.
PlateMap 07 — Distant field
The far layer carries architecture, landscape, sky, or distant decor. Its texture, sharpness, haze, and relative motion should match distance. A far wall should not travel like a foreground railing during a camera move.
Keep enough resolution for the final crop, but avoid adding microscopic detail that conflicts with the source’s focus and compression. The background must belong to the shot, not compete with the subject.
PlateMap 08 — Expected relative travel
Write an expected motion note for each plane: near travels most, subject plane follows the source, distant travels least—modified by the actual camera move. During a pure pan, relationships differ from a translation that reveals parallax. Treat the note as a hypothesis and compare it with source evidence.
For more complex shots, use motion tracking rather than hand-keyframing by eye. Adobe’s tracking and stabilization guide distinguishes one-, two-, and four-point tracking and explains how position, scale, rotation, and perspective data are applied.
Track at least one feature that remains visible for the full interval. If none exists, divide the shot into overlapping sections and reconcile them at stable frames. Store the selected feature and any manual corrections. A smooth-looking track is not auditable if the next editor cannot find what was followed.
PlateMap Move 3 — Make perspective, illumination, and velocity agree
PlateMap 09 — Vanishing line
Extend visible lines from floorboards, shelves, tables, doorframes, or buildings. Estimate horizon and vanishing direction, then align the replacement architecture. Do not bend the background to fit one frame if it breaks after the camera moves.
If the source provides too little perspective evidence, choose a simpler environment with fewer rigid lines. Soft natural space often tolerates uncertainty better than a corridor full of geometry.
PlateMap 10 — Key-light direction
Identify the brightest directional light on the subject and the shadow it creates. The replacement should explain that direction with a window, lamp, sun, or another plausible source. Check face highlights, nose and chin shadows, clothing folds, and rim light.
Adobe notes that light layers affect 3D layers according to light and material settings, and that camera/light relationships can be controlled in a composition. Even without rebuilding the scene in 3D, use a light map: direction, height, hardness, color, and intensity relationship.
PlateMap 11 — Warmth
Compare color temperature and local spill. A warm room should influence skin and reflective edges; a cool outdoor setting should not leave an unexplained orange rim unless a warm source exists. Adjust the environment and subject integration conservatively.
Avoid grading the subject so aggressively that product color or identity changes. Save a before/after reference at a neutral area and at the strongest colored edge.
Check warmth at skin, white fabric, neutral product surfaces, and semitransparent edges. If the source contains mixed lighting, preserve that complexity instead of forcing one global tint. Explain each dominant color source in the scene map.
PlateMap 12 — Movement rhythm
The background must respond to camera shake, acceleration, and settling with the same rhythm as the subject. Over-smoothed plates make a handheld subject float; excessive shake makes a locked shot feel unstable. Track a distinctive feature that remains visible and consistent through the shot.
Adobe advises reviewing the whole duration because a feature that works early can disappear, change, or blend into its surroundings. Correct drift in sections rather than forcing one bad track through the entire clip.
PlateMap Move 4 — Scrub for failures at contact points
PlateMap 13 — Hair and edge
Place temporary black, white, saturated, and midtone backgrounds behind the subject. Inspect hair, fur, fine fabric, motion blur, and semitransparent edges at normal speed and frame by frame. Look for old-color spill, holes, chatter, hard cutouts, and halos.
Fix the matte or choose a more compatible background. Do not hide an edge failure under blur that makes the subject visibly softer than the scene.
Review the same edge against four temporary colors and the final plate. A halo visible only on white may still appear during a bright background change later in the shot. Record the time range, edge location, repair, and retest result rather than marking the whole matte “good.”
PlateMap 14 — Foot-to-floor shadow
Feet need a believable floor relationship. Check contact point, shadow direction, softness, density, and movement. The shadow should react when the subject lifts or shifts weight. A static oval attached to the frame creates a floating effect.
Compare first contact, deepest weight, and final release. If feet are cropped, inspect the lowest visible contact with furniture or frame edge instead.
PlateMap 15 — Reflective surfaces
Glasses, glossy products, metal, screens, mirrors, and polished floors may still show the old environment. Identify each reflective surface before replacement and decide whether it needs cleanup, a new reflection, or a safer background choice.
Preserve product truth. A reflection correction must not change logo, color, label, material, or included features.
PlateMap 16 — Frame-to-frame slide
Track one fixed background feature relative to one source reference across the approval frames. If it slides, rotates, or scales independently without a camera reason, adjust the track or depth assignment. Then watch the full clip at normal speed, half speed, and reverse.

PlateMap 17 — Reusable fields
Save source clip ID, aspect ratio, duration, camera path, three approval frames, matte notes, near/human/far layers, horizon, key light, warmth, tracking method, contact-shadow settings, background prompt or source, tool/version, and rights status. These fields make the choice reproducible.
Do not store only the final render. The card should let another editor understand why the background works and which parts are safe to change.
Add a failure fingerprint: the two or three places most likely to break if the background is swapped again. Examples are left hair edge during the turn, right shoe contact at mid-shot, and screen reflection near the ending. Future reviewers can begin there before running the complete pass.
PlateMap 18 — Approval frames
Attach the three approved frames and one short playback capture. For each, record what was checked: edge, occlusion, scale, perspective, light, contact, reflection, and parallax. Add reviewer and date. A frame can pass while playback fails, so keep both forms of evidence.
Verify desktop, tablet, and mobile crops when the finished clip appears on a responsive page. The scene may remain technically correct but lose the subject or critical object under a narrow crop.
PlateMap 19 — Reuse rule
Define when the continuity card may be reused. A reasonable rule is: same source clip, same camera path, same subject scale, same approved background family, and no new occluder or reflective surface. Any changed condition triggers the relevant checks again.
Final free checklist: classify camera; mark matte and occluders; collect depth evidence; build near, human, and far planes; align horizon, light, warmth, and motion; inspect hair, contact shadow, reflections, and slide; save approval frames and reuse rules. Start with three key frames, replace the background in APOB, then review the full motion. The successful result is not a clever still—it is a scene that keeps agreeing with itself.
